Swedish, Deep Tissue, or Hot Stone? How to Choose Your Massage

how to choose a massage

One of the most common things I hear when someone books a massage is this. I do not know what kind I need, I just know I need one. If that is you, good news. You do not have to figure it out alone. That is my job, and today I want to walk you through it the same way I would if you were sitting in my studio in Aztec.

Start With One Simple Question

Do you want to relax, or do you want to work something out? Almost everything flows from that answer. Relaxation styles calm the whole body and quiet the mind. Therapeutic styles go after specific tension and soreness. Plenty of sessions blend both, but knowing your main goal helps us begin in the right place.

If You Want to Relax: Swedish and Aromatherapy

Swedish massage is the classic for a reason. It uses long, flowing strokes with lighter pressure, and it is wonderful for stress, poor sleep, and that run down feeling when life has been a lot. If you have never had a massage before, Swedish is a lovely place to start. There is nothing intimidating about it, and you will float out of the room.

Aromatherapy adds calming essential oils to the session, which deepens relaxation through scent. If your mind races even when your body is still, this pairing can be especially soothing.

If Something Hurts: Deep Tissue, Cupping, and Gua Sha

If you have a specific spot that bothers you, maybe a shoulder that carries your stress or a low back that complains after work, deep tissue is the workhorse. It uses slower, firmer pressure to reach the muscle layers underneath. A good deep tissue massage should never feel like punishment. I work with your body, not against it, but you will feel it doing its job, and you will thank yourself tomorrow.

Cupping therapy uses gentle suction to lift tissue, ease stubborn tension, and improve circulation. Gua Sha uses a smooth tool drawn along the muscles for a similar release. Both are wonderful for tightness that regular pressure has not solved, and I am happy to explain either before we begin.

If You Love Warmth: Hot Stone

Hot stone massage adds warm, smooth stones that melt tension in a way hands alone cannot. If you tend to run cold, feel stiff in the mornings, or simply love deep warmth, this one feels like a gift. It is especially popular here in the Four Corners once the weather turns.

For Moms to Be: Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage is a safe, gentle option designed for the changing body, with positioning and pressure adapted for every stage. Growing a human is hard work, and moms to be deserve care more than anyone. If you are pregnant and unsure whether massage is right for you, reach out and we will talk it through.

The Secret: You Do Not Have to Decide Alone

Here is what I want you to remember most. You do not have to arrive with the right answer. When you book with me, we spend a few minutes talking about how you are feeling and what your body has been through lately, and I tailor the session from there. Many of my sessions blend techniques, because real bodies rarely fit into one neat box.

I offer one hour sessions for seventy five dollars and ninety minute sessions for ninety dollars at my studio on Main Street in Aztec, and I welcome clients from Farmington and all across the Four Corners. Whatever brought you here, whether it is pain, stress, or simply the feeling that you have been taking care of everyone but yourself, your body will thank you for listening to it.
